SOUTHEAST ASIA

Date: 26 March 2017
Location: 01:43N - 101:264E, Lubuk Gaung Anchorage, Dumai, Indonesia
Event Description: Robbery Product Tanker

A robber attempted to board the anchored product tanker Ping An. Alert crew noticed the robber and raised the alarm. Seeing the crew alertness, the robber escaped in a boat with three accomplices. The robbers were apprehended by Indonesian Marine Police who were patrolling in the vicinity.

Event Description: Robbery Bulk Carrier

Duty AB on routine rounds onboard the anchored bulk carrier Ocean Ambition noticed the forecastle store door lock was broken. Further checks made on the forecastle indicated that the hawse pipe cover securing arrangements were cut through. The AB immediately informed the bridge and alarm raised. Crew mustered and went to the forecastle and found ship’s stores were stolen. Port Control informed.

Event Description: Armed Robbery Crude Tanker

Two suspicious speed boats with 2-3 persons in each boat approached a tanker underway. Master took evasive actions, sounded the ship’s horn and directed the signalling lamp towards the boats. At a distance of 15 metres from the tanker the boats aborted and moved away. The tanker continued her passage.

Event Description: Armed Robbery Chemical Tanker

Duty crew onboard an anchored tanker noticed a robber on the forecastle as he approached during routine rounds. The robber threatened the crew with a knife, resulting in the duty crew raising the alarm and retreating. Seeing the crew alertness, the robber escape in a boat. On conducting a thorough security check, ship properties found missing. Incident reported to the Philippines Coast Guard and Port Authority.

Event Description: Kidnapping from Tug

Tug boat, Super Shuttle Tug 1 towing roro cargo ship, Super Shuttle Roro 9 was en route from Cebu to General Santos City when four armed men boarded the tug boat from three wooden green speed boats. They abducted two crew (identified as the boat captain and chief engineer, both of Filipino nationality), and fled towards mainland Basilan. There were two armed men on board each speed boat. The remaining crew was safe and reported the incident to Philippine Coast Guard Station Zamboanga who immediately coordinated with local authorities and deployed floating assets to conduct maritime patrol in the vicinity.

Event Description: Armed Robbery LPG Tanker

During loading operations, duty crew on board a LPG carrier, noticed a robber hiding near the starboard winches. When confronted, the robber threatened the crew with a long knife. Alarm raised and crew alerted. Seeing the alerted crew, the robber escaped in a waiting boat with his accomplice. On searching the tanker after the incident, the crew reported ship’s properties were stolen. Local authorities and local agents informed.

Event Description: Attempted Robbery Tanker

Duty AB on routine rounds onboard an anchored tanker noticed one person attempting to climb onboard by using a bamboo stick attached to a hook at 2020 UTC. The duty AB informed the DO who raised alarm. Seeing the alerted crew and the intruders aborted and moved away.

Event Description: Armed Robbery Chemical Tanker

Unnoticed, robbers boarded an anchored chemical tanker. Duty AB on routine rounds noticed that theforepeak store lock was broken and immediately informed the duty officer on the bridge. A search was made throughout the tanker. It was reported that ship’s properties were stolen.

Event Description: Possible armed robbery

While at anchor, the 2nd engineer reported that a portable welding machine, an electric drill and an electric hacksaw were found missing from the engine room workshop. Upon checking, the emergency access to the steering flat was found to be opened. A search was conducted, but no person was found. The agent and port authority were informed.

          GULF OF ADEN & INDIAN OCEAN

Location: 14:20N 053:11E, 111nm NW of Socotra Island, near Point B, IRTC
Event Description: Suspicious approach

MV reported a vessel closed to a distance of 1nm from their bow with additional four skiffs seen on their starboard beam at a distance of 0.5nm at 0315 UTC. Four POB sighted on each skiff with weapons. AST showed presence and the vessels moved away. Vessel is SAFE.

Location: 1402.09N 05140.00E Gulf of Aden
Event Description: Bulk carrier boarded by pirates

While underway armed pirates in a skiff came alongside and boarded a tanker. The Master and crew stopped the engine and retreated into the citadel and requested for help. On 09.04.2017 the vessel was boarded by authorities and all crew rescued. No pirates were found on board. The crew resumed control of the vessel and sailed to a safe port.

Event Description: Tanker approached

A suspicious skiff with three persons on board approached a tanker underway. Alarm raised, crew alerted and onboard security guard showed weapons. Seeing the vessel hardening and alerted crew, the skiff aborted the approach and moved away from the tanker. All crew safe. The tanker continued her passage.

Event Description: ESS&SA team warning shots fired

An ESS&SA team reported being approached by 1 skiff with 3 POB. Ladder sighted. Vessel sounded foghorn, raised the alarm and armed guards took up position on bridge wings and showed their weapons. Skiff continued to approach and armed guards fired warning shots. The skiff altered course towards the Somali Coast. MV is safe.

Event Description: Dhow Salama 1 Hijacked

Reports of Pakistani dhow Salama 1 hijacked near El Hur, Somalia. Enroute to Kismayo. Presently in the vicinity of El Hur.

Event Description: Suspicious Approach

An MV reported being approached by 6 light blue colored skiffs with 5 POB on each skiff. Ladders and hooks were sighted. Vessel raised the alarm and armed guards took up position on bridge wings. After 2 – 3 minutes the suspicious skiffs left. MV IS SAFE.

Event Description: Dhow Al Kaushar Hijacked

A Sambuk Cargo Dhow Al Kaushar with 11 crew onboard was boarded and hijacked by pirates while enroute to Bosaso. The dhow is currently inside Somali coastal waters between Hobyo and El Hur.

Event Description: Dhow Casayr II No. 30 Hijacked

Pirates attacked and hijacked a dhow and took hostage its 20 crew members. The dhow had three skiffs onboard. The pirates released 13 crew members in one skiff. The dhow with the remaining crew and an unknown number of pirates sailed to an unknown location. The pirates released the dhow on 26.03.2017 after stealing one skiff along with food and diesel.

Event Description: Armed Robbery Bulk Carrier

During cargo operations, duty crew on routine rounds onboard a bulk carrier noticed two robbers armed with knives on the poop deck. Chief Officer informed via walkie-talkie. Crew mustered and then proceed to the poop deck. Seeing the crew alertness, the robber jumped overboard and escaped without stealing anything. The incident was reported to the Authorities who boarded the ship to investigate.

Event Description: Oil Tanker Aris 13 Hijacked

Reports suggest that an oil tanker (Aris 13) has been taken by 8 Somali pirates and taken to the vicinity of Ras Asayr. CSO reported to UKMTO that communications were lost with the vessel in position: 12º01.67N / 051º27.25E on 13/3 at 11:54 UTC.

              WEST AFRICA

Location: 05:52.11S – 013:02.49E, Congo River, Angola
Event Description: Robbery Bulk Carrier

Duty crew on routine rounds onboard an anchored bulk carrier noticed six robbers on the forecastle and immediately informed the duty officer on the bridge. Alarm and ships whistle sounded. Seeing the alerted crew, the robbers escaped in their boat with the stolen ship’s properties.

Location: 06°16N / 003°11E 10NM from Lagos, Nigeria
Event Description: Possible boarding

At around 03:35ZHrs, a duty team on board a merchant vessel spotted a movement on forecastle deck area. Alarm was then raised, and assistance from Nigerian Navy ship requested. After investigation, nobody was found on board and nothing was reported stolen.

Event Description: Suspicious activity

At around 20:35ZHrs a vessel was followed and approached up to 0.5 Nm. Effective anti-piracy reactions were immediately taken by crew. The darkness didn’t allow any clear identification of the approaching vessel.

Event Description: Kidnapping Bulk Carrier

Early morning hours, four persons in a small boat approached, came alongside and boarded a bulk carrier as it approached the pilot boarding station. They kidnapped six crew members and escaped.

Event Description: Attack on Product Tanker

Armed pirates in a boat chased and fired upon a tanker underway. The onboard armed naval security team returned fire resulting in the pirates aborting the attack and moving away. All crew safe. The tanker continued her voyage to her next port.

Location: 30NM/SOUTH from Monrovia - LIBERIA
Event Description: Suspicious activity

On 19th March 2017 at around 14:10ZHrs, in position 05°48N / 010°36W, a merchant vessel spotted a suspicious craft (yacht type) following her for 20 minutes. Merchant vessel proceeded to evasive manoeuvers, then suspicious craft stopped and altered course. MDAT-GoG Comments: After contact with the ship master, it appeared that craft wasn’t fitted with piracy tools (ladder…). A fishing rod had been seen on board. MDAT-GoG so classified this event as a false alarm.

              SOUTH AMERICA

Location: 10:19.3N - 075:32.1W, Cartagena anchorage, Colombia
Event Description: Robbery bitumen/ asphalt tanker

Four robbers boarded an anchored tanker. Alarm raised and crew mustered. Seeing the crew alertness, the robbers escaped with stolen ship’s properties. Port Control notified.
